They did so on the private island of British billionaire and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson. He ended up introducing Obama to kitesurfing, which the 44th president wound up excelling at. As it turns out, Obama was quite the surfer in Hawaii, so it didn't take long for him to pick up kitesurfing. Branson shared images from their kitesurfing and foilboarding fun as well as his thoughts on what vacationing with Obama was like via the Virgin website. It's clear that America is the ex that the former president is getting over quite fast: https://www.instagram.com/p/BQN0jDSDCdq/?tagged=barackobama&hl=en
It was a huge honour to be able to invite President Barack and Michelle Obama down to the British Virgin Islands for a complete break after Barack finished his second term as President and the family left the White House. One of the first stories Barack told me when he and Michelle arrived on Moskito Island was how, just before he became President, he had been surfing on a dangerous break in Hawaii. When he came in from an exhilarating session, the new head of his security team turned to him and said: “This will be the last time you surf for eight years.” For the next eight years he didn’t have the chance to surf, enjoy watersports or do many of the things he loved. So it was tremendous to offer him the chance to learn to kitesurf. The sport has really taken off in the past decade and we have the perfect conditions and team to help anyone learn. I have also wanted to learn foilboard surfing. So we decided to set up a friendly challenge: could Barack learn to kitesurf before I learned to foilboard? We agreed to have a final day battle to see who could stay up the longest.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BQN0WeHjfTC/?tagged=barackobama&hl=en In the video below that Branson shared of their kitesurfing vs. foilboard surfing experiences, the former president managed to stay on his board the longest. "I was feeling very pleased with myself, only to look over and see Barack go 100 metres on his kiteboard!" Branson said. "I had to doff my cap to him and celebrate his victory." Might we add, Obama looked the happiest we've seen him in quite some time. Check out their skills below and prepare to feel that longing feeling once you remember who your current president is. *deep sighs* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vqhw8kxVd2o
